Open Licensing Improves Institutional Responsiveness and Reduces Administrative Burden During Emergencies

In this presentation, we tell the tale of two courses.

During emergencies like natural disasters, armed conflicts, and mass casualty events, demand for responder training content surges. Responding to that demand is significantly more difficult and slower when the content in question isn't open. To illustrate, we will describe two case studies. In one, our response was time-consuming and slow because the content wasn't open. In the other, our response was effortless and speedy because thanks to open licensing. We invite you to hear our stories and share your own so we can all use those stories to bolster the case for open educational resources in our home institutions.

Session outcomes and takeaways: (1) By the end of the session, participants will be able to describe a concrete example that illustrates a tangible institutional benefit of publishing instructional content under an open license. (2) During the session, participants will be encouraged to identify and share their own concrete examples of improved responsiveness and reduced administrative burden resulting from adoption of open licensing.
